ASHEVILLE – The Ashebots, a robotics team from Asheville, won the state FIRST Tech Challenge championship and will now head to Super Regionals in San Antonio, Texas, according to a news release.
The team is made up of seventh through 12th-graders from the Asheville area who meet weekly at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College with volunteer mentors.
The team is a mix of students including teens from area public schools and home schools.
They design, build and program robots for FIRST Tech Challenge, which was founded in 1989 “to inspire young people’s interest and participation in science and technology.”
Like the FIRST Lego Leagues for elementary and middle school students, FTC provides a different robotics challenge each year.
After winning awards in Charlotte at the NC FTC Qualifiers, the Ashebots team traveled to Greensboro for the state championship.
With their “Guzzoline” Mad Max-themed robot, they were not only the first place State Championship Alliance Winner, but also received the First Place Inspire, an award given for best all-around team.
